                                             Advantages of Breast Feeding

Advantages of Breast feeding have been cited over and over again by medical experts, practitioners, academicians for lactating mothers. The debate on whether there is a significant advantage for the child’s growth through breast feeding as opposed to other avenues has been going on for the better part of the last three decades. One thing is for sure, the advantages clearly outnumber any disadvantages associated with breast feeding.

World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the week 1st Aug to 7th Aug as the “Breast Feeding week”. The initiative by a leading world organization itself is a major endorsement on how important is breast feeding for the mums and for the child.

Some of the advantages of Breast Feeding for the child are:

  • Breast milk helps the baby in the development of the brain. Studies have shown that breast fed babies tend to have higher I.Q than formula fed babies
  • Human breast milk is designed so that baby’s body can totally utilize it. This is not the case with formula fed babies
  • Breast milk help the baby develop immunity, fight diseases. It is critical nutrients that is passed on from the mother to the child
  • Breast milk is more than just food. It increases the emotional bond between the mother and the child
  • More than anything else, breast milk provides the required nutrients like proteins, fats, vitamins, iron, minerals etc which are essential for child’s development

Some of the advantages of Breast Feeding for the mother are:

  • Reduce the risk of breast cancer: Breast cancer is growing into one of the major health issue for women. It is often noted that breast feeding helps in reducing the onset of breast cancer by a significant amount. The more months or years a mother breastfeeds, the lower the risk of breast cancer
  • Breastfeeding helps the mother in losing the pregnancy weight. It is most effective way of getting into shape
  • Breastfeeding aids in saving time and money
  • Mothers who breast feed have a better emotional health. Studies have shown that breast feeding mothers show less anxiety and depression than formula feeding mothers
  • Also helps the mother is reducing the onset of osteoporosis, ovarian cancer
