A homoeopathic paediatrician, a counselling expert and a freelance writer are a few words to describe my profession. My sole aim is to put forth practical piece of information that guides every one right in the direction, blending the medicos to a layman with a simple gesture to make the medical things a little less convoluted and comprehendible.

With the advent use of fertility treatments, old age pregnancies and newer technologies there has been a constant rise in the twin births. In simple words this type can be described as two foetuses in one womb at one time. Identical twins an extended form of twins is one term used for absolutely same looking foetus who originate from the same egg whereas frantic twins are those originating from different eggs and look different from each other.

How it happens?

Though many studies have been done on the subject till date but nothing solid till now has not been accomplished often the trait runs in families where a mother with inherent genes for twins moves towards pregnancy. In case of identical twins it is one egg which later splits in to two and moves to develop two lives in one time. in frantic twins sometimes the ovum instead of releasing one egg releases two at a time and with surplus sperms at disposal both get fertilised to fetch twin birth.

Sex in case of identical twins will be same for both the babies whereas it doesn’t apply to the frantic ones. Simply because the former develops from one egg only and the later are two different stories just running parallel to each other.

Apart from the genetic constitution there are drugs available in the pharmacy world which stimulate ovary to release more than one ovum’s at a time leading to these twin deliveries.

Mal adaptations

Though the process is natural and safe in case of frantic twins but sometimes with a weak mother it may be quite a demand on her body requiring extra help and nourishment to combat. Also possibilities of death of one of the twin can’t be ignored completely.

In case of identical twins the things are more convoluted and complex as the twins may remain attached to each other till the end mal adapting in form of conjoined twins. In some case the attachment can be trivial and easy to handle with an immediate surgery but where the conjoint is huge and running the vitals of both bodies it becomes almost impossible to separate. For instance if the babies are joined on the head sharing major nerve roots then no surgeon can make them separate and two different individuals. Displaced organs within the body is another concern, many may within the development phase to adjust push from the normal position and will remain this way forever though it usually is not a problem but is a situation. Further a weak infant is another possibility to name.

How to differentiate identical twins?

Studies clearly reveal that twins throughout their lives look more or less similar with a mere difference of range of about 5 kilograms in total. Their DNA as initiating from the same egg also turns similar. They may be a mirror image of each other but often they present with some minute changes that make them identifiable from each other. Finger prints, hand writing, teeth are a few landmarks. And also the person’s grooming and individual traits would surely be there.
