Does HSV 1 have a latency period before primary infection
I've been in a monogamous relationship for one year and my partner and I have recently contracted genital HSV 1. We noticed bumps on his penis after genital- genital sex: two days later I developed symptoms and swab tested HSV 1 positive (he was unable to have a swab test because his lesions were not open at the time of his clinical appointment). Can this type of HSV have a latency period before a primary outbreak? Neither of us have had symptoms of this sort before although he has had one cold sore outbreak in his life (before we met). I understand that HSV 2 can lie dormant for an indeterminate amount of time but it's unclear whether it is the same case with HSV 1. Note: we both experienced flu like symptoms in addition to genital lesions/bumps. These included headaches, malaise, depression, sore throat, etc.
